Many entrepreneurs nowadays host their business online, rather than offline. In order for online businesses to be successful, the business owners must increase their website’s ranking in the search engines (i.e. Google, Yahoo, Bing, or AOL). To receive higher click-through rates to your website and/or blog, it is extremely imperative that you focus on increasing your ranking during your first year of business. One of the most popular methods of increasing your ranking is to use social media. Social media has become ingrained in our society today; and thus, we no longer have to take the long route (ex: making phone calls, travelling to specific destinations). Everything is now accessible with the click of a button. Also, not only has social media allowed us to reach out to other countries; social media has evolved into one of our primary forms of communication.

Tips to Increase Ranking with Social Media

Tip #1: Ask Your Peers to Spread the Word About Your Business.

Log on to your preferred social media platform – albeit Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Google+, YouTube, or Pinterest – and simply type in the name of your business as well as your message. The message could say “Tell Your Friends About Our Business”, or it could be any other message of your choice. Then, ask them to SHARE the post, RETWEET the post, LIKE the post, +1 the post, or REPIN the post. After your followers have done so, this will drive more traffic to your respective website and/or blog. If you ask someone to do you a favor, there is a higher possibility that they will actually do the favor you asked them to do. Very simple, right?

Tip #2: Share Your Content on your Social Media Platforms.

One of the easiest ways to increase your ranking is to share your content on your preferred social media outlet. For example, when you finish writing and publishing your blog post, copy and paste the URL into Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Google+, or Pinterest. Next, type in the title of your blog post before the URL to grab your followers’ attention. Then, when your followers see your blog post in their timeline or feed, they might click on it if it seems interesting.

Tip #3: Install Social Media plugins on Your Blogging Platform (i.e. Blogger, WordPress, Typepad).

This next tip stems from Tip #2. If one of your readers enjoys your entry, he or she may want to share it with his or her friends. However, if there are no social media plugins installed, that individual may find it tedious to actually copy and paste the URL into their feed. With that said, if you have social media plugins installed on your blogging platform, your readers will be more inclined to share the posts with their friends. This, in turn, will drive more traffic to your blog as well as increase your ranking.

Tip #4: Don’t be boring.

In order to grab your reader’s attention, you must have a hook – or, a sentence that can immediately grab the reader’s attention. Use exclamation marks and capital letters here and there. Try not to write “mundane, essay-like” posts on your Facebook page. Many individuals log onto social media platforms to have a good time; however, if they see a post that resembles that of school and work… they may not even read the post. We only have a couple of seconds to grab the reader’s attention, so it’s imperative that we jazz up our posts a bit by being humorous. For example, if a Series Regular is leaving a TV show, we can say “OMG! Rumor has it that  ________ is leaving The Biggest Loser?! Is this really happening?” Posts like these will stir up a bit of controversy.

Tip #5: Ask your followers about the topics they are interested in, and then write an entry regarding those topics.

Log onto your Twitter or Facebook, and ask your followers, “What topics are you interested in? Do you have any questions for me?” Then, when you receive a few questions, you can write a post that answers those questions.

Tip #6: Host giveaways on your preferred social media platform.

Professional YouTubers generally like to host giveaways, as a way of thanking their subscribers for supporting them throughout the years. You can also do the same on your blog! For example, you can give away a $25 Amazon gift card to the reader who provides the most thoughtful comment or to the reader who provides the funniest comment. Giveaways are usually a very popular method of attracting more visitors because people enjoy receiving free things.

Tip #7: Use tags on Facebook and hashtags on Twitter.

For instance, if you are writing about your favorite restaurant (ex: The Cheesecake Factory), tag The Cheesecake Factory business page on Facebook by using the @ symbol. On Twitter, be sure to hashtag The Cheesecake Factory by using the # symbol. When your followers click on the hashtag, this will potentially increase your click-through rates.

Tip #8: Use Pinterest and Tumblr to generate more image traffic.

To jazz up your blog entries a bit, you can add images. Many individuals use Google Image Search to look for their favorite images. For instance, if they type in “toy poodle” into the Google Search function, they’ll be directed to cute pictures of toy poodles. Then, when they click on the image, it could potentially be YOUR image that they are clicking on.

Tip #9: Guest Blog for a high-traffic website within your given niche.

If your website is a tutorial on how to design a website, you can negotiate a contract with the owner of a high-traffic website. When you guest post on said high-traffic website, you can link to your OWN website at the bottom of your guest post. This, in turn, will increase your ranking.

Tip #10: Find forums that are related to your given niche, and then backlink.

One of the best ways to increase ranking is to comment on forums. Simply find a forum that is related to your blog, then leave a comment, and then link back to your blog. Usually, forums allow you to list your signature at the bottom of your comment (i.e. your name, your business name, and your domain name). If other forum commenters are interested in learning more about you, they might click on your domain name/URL.
